Why Indian Education Must Draw Strength from Its Own Ethos

Over the years, we have looked to global education systems for inspiration, and rightly so. Approaches like inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary thinking, and student agency have added real value. They push us to learn, unlearn, and keep evolving.

But an important question remains. Can borrowed ideas alone shape the future of education in India?

India is not just another system. It is a civilisation with a deep educational legacy that has always valued not only knowledge, but also balance, values, and self-awareness.

Traditionally, learning here was not limited to textbooks. It involved observation, reflection, dialogue, and hands-on experience. Learning engaged the head, the hand, and the heart.

Somewhere along the way, in our effort to modernise, we moved away from this balance.

At Singhania, we have been consciously reflecting on this. While we continue to adopt global practices, we are also bringing Indian ethos into everyday learning in a lived, meaningful way.

For instance, through spaces like pottery labs, textile labs, and design centres. When a student sits at the wheel, they learn patience. When they work with threads and patterns, they learn focus. When something does not turn out as expected, they learn acceptance. And when they create something with their own hands, they experience a quiet sense of fulfilment.

This reflects a deeper idea from our own tradition, where craft and knowledge are not separate, and where the process matters as much as the outcome. The goal is not to look backwards, but to move forward with awareness. Global exposure gives us perspective. But rootedness gives us identity.
