When Gratitude Becomes Action: A Lesson in Freedom and Responsibility

As part of this month’s theme of Gratitude, this time of year holds a special meaning for me. Independence Day has always evoked a deep sense of pride, responsibility and gratitude. Growing up, I never missed the Independence Day celebrations at India Gate in Delhi with my parents. Even the rain could not stop us. We would carry our umbrellas and raincoats, sit together and watch the celebrations with a sense of wonder and pride. Those memories have stayed with me.

Today, as an educator, I may not be able to take my students to experience those celebrations in person, but I can help them experience something perhaps even more meaningful: the responsibility that comes with freedom and the gratitude we owe to those who make it possible. So, I asked my students a simple question: When you feel grateful, how can you give something back?

The students chose to express their gratitude in a deeply personal way. They thoughtfully made Rakhis and visited the Air Force station, where they tied these handmade Rakhis to the servicemen who serve and protect us. What looked like a simple gesture carried a much deeper message: a bond of respect, care and appreciation for those whose service often happens away from our everyday lives.

For me, this is where education finds its deeper purpose. Gratitude should move us from feeling to action, from appreciation to responsibility, and from being grateful beneficiaries of our country to becoming responsible citizens who contribute to it. Things may change: the places we visit, the activities we do, even the ways in which children express themselves. But the values we should nurture in our children- gratitude, empathy, respect, responsibility and service- will remain.

And perhaps that is the real meaning of education: not merely preparing children for the future, but helping them become the kind of people who will make that future better. May gratitude always be more than a feeling. May it become a way of living.
